Why JM Environmental for Asbestos Abatement?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring family of minerals formed by combinations of magnesium and silicon. These minerals take the form of hollow, microscopic fibers, which are nearly indestructible, heat resistant, and can be densely packed -- making a tough, flexible and very useful material. Due to its special properties, it has been widely used; nearly every building built between 1950 and 1980 contains asbestos in some form. Some common places where asbestos can be found include:
- Pipe and ductwork insulation
- Linoleum backing
- Vinyl floor tiles
- Fireproofing and sound proofing offices
|
- Ceiling tiles
- Acoustical spray
- Plaster
- Taping compounds
- Roofing material

Asbestos that can be crumbled by hand pressure is called “friable” asbestos, and is the most dangerous form. Exposure to asbestos occurs when asbestos fibers separate from their bonding material, or matrix, and are released into the air and inhaled. These tiny fibers are so small that it takes 600 asbestos fibers bundled together to equal the thickness of one human hair. These small fibers can enter the lungs and create a condition called “asbestosis”, where scar tissue caused by the fibers does not permit oxygen to penetrate.
EPA and local agencies oversee the removal of all Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) that contain asbestos concentrations of 1% or more. OSHA regulates asbestos as it relates to worker handling and safety of ACM at .01% or more. Specific regulations govern the removal, transportation, and disposal of all ACM. Improper handling can result in severe civil and criminal penalties.
Both the US EPA and Cal/OSHA regulate asbestos abatement activities including contractor registration, air quality management, and accreditation of training providers.
All of our employees are thoroughly educated and highly trained to handle asbestos material. In addition, we are specially licensed to transport the hazardous waste away from the job site; when we leave the job site, so does all the hazardous waste, without another company having to come pick up the hazardous material. Our extensive field experience dealing with asbestos assures you that the job will be abated properly, the first time. Our customer’s satisfaction and providing a safe environment are our primary goals. |
